Stop 10: Belgian Coastal Sites







After retreating from Antwerp, the Belgian army retreated to the Yser River where they dug in and maintained control of the lock system that allowed the Allies to flood the Yser plain making it impossible for the German army to flank the Western Front from its northern end. Germany did, however, gain a base for its U-boats at Zeebrugge, which the Royal Navy attempted to destroy in a 1918 raid.
