On my recent trip to the Western Front we stopped at this striking new monument at Vlamertinge on the N38, the road from Ypres to Poperinge, in commemoration of the war horses who served and died in great numbers during hostilities. It is called "Agonie" and was created by Flemish sculptor Luc Coomans. Dedicated in May 2013 it seemed to be inspired by the stage puppet equines of the play War Horse, but I've not read any confirmation of that.
Given how much these lovable and faithful creatures suffered during the War, surely we could never put up too many monuments and expressions of appreciation for them.
