The Centennial at the Grass Roots: Golden Age Air Museum, Bethel, PA

In my experience, no aspect of the First World War has more allure than its aviation dimension. It has it all: legends & heroes (aces and barnstormers), technology, and relevance right down to our current day. One of the aerodromes keeping this tradition alive is the Golden Age Air Museum at Bethel, PA.  (link)

The museum has an inventory of WWI replicas, including a SPAD XIII now being completed, as well as aircraft from the 1920s and '30s. Here's one example from their collection – a Fokker Dr.I, just like the Red Baron flew.

Better News:

This weekend the museum is hosting an air show promising "Daredevil Flying & Death Defying Excitement!" The event includes the opportunity to take a ride in a vintage biplane. Don't miss it, if you're in the neighborhood.

  1. I live about 45 miles away from the Golden Age Air Museum and get to their events at least once a year if not more often. It is a small gem of an operation unlike any other I have visited. The WWI replicas will certainly be of great interest to readers of Roads to the Great War. I find the early and inter war civilian aircraft equally Impressive. Few places offer the aviation enthusiast the ability to see these types of aircraft operating from a basic rural grass strip facility and also in flight. The atmosphere at Golden Age almost seems as if old black and white still photos and movie clips are being brought to life. I highly recommend this place, especially on their event weekends.
