    Germans built trenches for long haul in the Western Front, because they had chosen to remain on the defensive. British and French trenches were not built with the idea of staying in place, but of forward advancement. Right?

      Absolutely...the Allies were on the offensive to repulse the invaders. The Allies saw trenches as necessary emplacements in preparation for the offensive action to drive the Germans from French/Belgium soil.
