Neuvilly, France: The Story Behind an Iconic WWI Photograph

  1. It is worth noting that there is a moving poem based on the photograph of the interior of the church at Neuvilly. It is by Daniel Mark Epstein and it entitled "Photographer Unknown, Neuvilly 1918". I won't reproduce it here due to length and possible copyright issues. A bit of web searching will lead to Epstein's 2015 book "Dawn to Twilight, New and Selected Poems"; see p. 130. The poetic word-picture that Epstein provides captures the scene in the picture in a very moving way. Whenever I visit the church, either alone or leading a group, I read this poem aloud while standing at about the point the photographer stood in 1918.
