A regiment-sized attack against a strongly fortified position that is not part of a larger operation seems a senseless error. Guess that’s the point of making the attack.
My grandfather served with the 107th IR and went thru a similar attack at the 'Second Battle of the Somme'-he survived. Four years later, he married my grandmother whose older brother fought a similar battle near the Second battle of the Anise (Chemins des Dames) in 1917-he didn't survive. Neither one would talk about those times.
