  1. A regiment-sized attack against a strongly fortified position that is not part of a larger operation seems a senseless error. Guess that’s the point of making the attack.

  2. In many ways, this is more poignant than Remarque's 'All Quiet on The Western Front'.

  3. My grandfather served with the 107th IR and went thru a similar attack at the 'Second Battle of the Somme'-he survived. Four years later, he married my grandmother whose older brother fought a similar battle near the Second battle of the Anise (Chemins des Dames) in 1917-he didn't survive.
    Neither one would talk about those times.
