    So this one is precursors to the war, dating back a century?

One could go on dreaming up key events for ever of course, but surely one that had a long reach forward was the guaranteeing of Belgium's territorial integrity by the Great Powers in 1820, I think it was. Honouring this undertaking ("Poor Little Belgium!") was an important propaganda ploy in generating popular UK support in 1914 for entering the war.
