A Prewar Celebrity: The Panther

  1. A 1970s movie, "The Wind and the Lion" starring Sean Connery told a very interesting and entertaining fictional account of this Agadir Crisis. I saw it in a military theater in the Canal Zone of Panama about the time that the US Embassy in Saigon fell. When the US Marines seized back the US Embassy in the film, the theater erupted in a roar of patriotic approval.

    2. Actually, that was an earlier crisis involving the kidnapping of an American named Pericardis by a tribal chief during Teddy Roosevelt's Administration. The mistake is understandable because by the time Hollywood had altered the facts, the story bore a limited connection to reality. In real life, Pericardis was a man, not someone who could be played by Candice Bergen!
