The editor's abstract states: "One of the U.S. Marine Corps’ most resourceful opponents in World War I has received curiously little attention in historical accounts: [Then] Major Josef Bischoff, commander of the 461st Infantry Regiment, who led German forces against Marines at Belleau Wood. This article offers a much-needed biography of the only German tactical leader at Belleau Wood mentioned by name in various accounts of the battle."
