Out of the Ordinary: Images from the Collection of Tony Langley

For the last decade I have been most fortunate to have Tony Langley of Antwerp, Belgium, as a contributing editor to all of my publications. Today we are sharing a selection of the interesting images he has sent us from his vast collection.

Ernst Vollbehr was born in Kiel in 1876 and studied painting at various academies in Germany. A born traveler, Vollbehr painted scenes during his many prewar journeys to such countries as Albania, Brazil, German West Africa, Cameroon, and Togoland. After the war he continued painting in what where then faraway and exotic lands such as India, Ceylon, Indonesia, Hawaii, California, and many others.

  1. Dear Langley,
I trust this is the correct forum for contacting you. About ten years ago, you very generously allowed me to use a selection of WW1 images from your collection as part of an art work I was developing. It was for a local exhibition here in Oakland California titled Banned and Recovered; about books that had been banned for political or other reasons and then later again published. I selected All Quiet on the Western Front and produced a large, four by six foot, theatrical kind of banner for the show. Subsequently, I sent you a CD with the image and relevant data. I trust that arrived safely. I'm now about to turn eighty eight and looking for venues to house parts of my work. If you're interested I would very much like to send the work to you for your collection along with the original drawings that were reproduced in the work. If this is of interest, please let me know along with an appropriate address and which mailing service you think would be best. I look forward to your reply. Sincerely, Malcolm Lubliner
