Tomorrow night, the Turner Movie Classics network is launching an outstanding World War One film festival to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the conflict. Below is the schedule for opening night alongside the list of films to be seen on future Friday evenings. Almost all the best-known classics are included ( I don't see The African Queen or Hell's Angels), but — most exciting for me — are the hard to find oldies like The Better Hole (Bairnsfather's Old Bill brought to the silver screen) and the original Waterloo Bridge.
Nor "The Blue Max," or "What Price Glory?" but no complaints here. Must. Record. "Wings".
ReplyDeleteI won't miss Hell's Angels. Terrible film. The original "Blockbuster", clichéd and sensational. A Zeppelin commander ordering his crew to jump out without parachutes to lighten the ship for instance, which never happened.
ReplyDeleteHowever, Wings is a genuine classic with some fine performances, and Dawn Patrol will do as an adventure story. Other classics worth seeing are Auguste Renoir's "La Grande Illusion", and Kubricks "Paths of Glory".
WIngs is indeed a classic -- the first Oscar winner for best movie!
ReplyDeleteAnd as an added bonus, "Wings" was shot around here - San Antonio, Texas: large bits of Bexar County = France.
ReplyDeleteNo "Paths of Glory", just hurrah films...
