From: A Preliminary to War: The 1st Aero Squadron and the Mexican Punitive Expedition
The 1st Aero Squadron, or the 1st Reconnaissance Squadron, is the oldest U.S. military flying unit. It was formed 5 March 1913 and has an unbroken heritage of over 100 years. General John J. Pershing ordered the 1st Aero Squadron to become the first aviation unit to participate in military action when he added the unit to his forces for the Punitive Expedition into Mexico.
The squadron went on to serve in all of America's wars of the 20th and 21st centuries and is today deployed at Beale, AFB, California.
