Now all roads lead to France and heavy is the tread
Of the living; but the dead returning lightly dance.

Remembering Dennis Showalter (1942–2019)

The distinguished military historian died on 30 December.  His output was massive, covering a vast range of periods and conflicts. His work on the First World War included a strong focus on the Eastern Front. His volume on Tannenberg is considered the most authoritative in the English language. Here is the professor giving a talk on the Eastern Front at the National World War One Museum:

  1. Dennis was a terrific speaker, a renowned scholar, left a great legacy, and will be missed.

  2. I have all his books. A real loss.

  3. One of the greatest World War I historians has passed. A true gentleman and kind soul.

  4. I got to see him do an entertaining Q&A session at the Pritzker Museum's "On War" symposium on November 1 (maybe his last public speaking event?). Many of the great authors are getting up there in years, so take advantage of seeing them lecture whenever possible!
