Of the living; but the dead returning lightly dance.

  1. “It is the first rebellion that ever took place in Ireland where you had a majority on your side. It is the fruit of our life work... and now you are washing out our whole life work in a sea of blood.”

    — John Dillon, addressing the British Parliament after the executions

Irish and British relationships started to fall apart because of WW1. A sense of betrayal filled the air in Ireland when Britain refused to continue negotiations for Irelands quest of self rule. This caused tensions to escalate between the two countries, which led to the Easter Uprising. When the rebels were executed, public opinion started to sway in favor of full independence for Ireland, which created the political party Sinn Féin. The rebels became martyrs, for the fight of Irish independence. However, there were many obstacles at home for the freedom fighters because of the hundreds of thousands of Irishmen fighting in the trenches. The public did not appreciate the rebels and viewed them as extremist that were causing trouble for Ireland during the worst possible time.
