Located on the southwest coast of New Zealand's North Island, the small city of Wanganui constructed a striking memorial following the Great War. The 104-foot tall Durie Hill Memorial Tower was opened in 1925 to commemorate (as the plaque below reads) the 513 young people from Wanganui and district who died in WWI. The tower is built of rugged-looking local shellrock and is equipped with an elevator for access to its viewing platform, which is 372 feet above sea level.
