"Biggles Flies East", by W E Johns. This is one of the first "Biggles" books and like the other early stories was originally written for adults. It stands up well as an adventure/espionage story, with our eponymous hero joined a German aviation unit in Palestine in disguise, and meeting his enemy for the next half-century, Eric von Stalhein.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the prequels to Buchan's Mr Standfast - "The Thirty-Nine Steps", set just before the start of the war, and "Greenmantle", which if I remember correctly (it is 50 years since I read it!) is set in the Ottoman Empire.
