Western Front Virtual Tour — Stop 18: Artois







French Flanders and Artois first saw action during the 1914 "Race to the Sea".  In 1915 both British and French forces fought intense battles here, although the sector is best remembered for the 1917 capture of Vimy Ridge by the Canadian Corps.

  1. The 5,533 casualties suffered by the Australian 5th Division at Fromelles on the 19th of July 1916 was equivalent to the total Australian casualties in the Boer War, Korean War and Vietnam War put together.
