Images of Hungary at War

Hungary is taking advantage of the Centennial to remember its 661,000 soldiers who lost their lives in the war. Thanks to exhibition last year at Budapest's Várkert Bazár, at the foot of the former Royal Castle on the Buda side of the Danube, titled "A New World Is Born — The European War Between Brothers," many images of Hungary's war effort never seen in the west  have been released. Here are a few I've come across.

  2. If you're interested in reading a first-hand account of the Hungarian military experience at Rava Ruska (Galicia)in September 1914, check out "The Burning of the World - A Memoir of 1914" by Bela Zombory-Moldovan. Bela was a graphic artist working in Budapest when the war broke out. It's a great read with maps and copious footnotes.

  3. Thank you for the article, and I'll have to look into recommended first-hand account. I have a handful of photos of my Bohemian grandfather's uncle in an Austro-Hungarian uniform (on maneuvers or assembling for war). All I know of that relative is that he died of typhus during the war. I'm assuming that it may have been on the Balkan front.
